Heather Zimmerman

I’m a writer and editor based in San Jose, California.

I love storytelling. Maybe that’s why my favorite things about writing are learning something new and figuring out how best to share it with others. I enjoy creating engaging copy that helps people tell their stories.

My background is in local journalism, where I’ve spent the bulk of my career so far, and where my work has focused on arts and culture in the South Bay. I branched out to freelance writing and editing, and most recently have worked as a content writer for city government.

When I’m not holed up with notes and my laptop, I enjoy getting out and supporting the local arts scene. And since 2018, I’ve been a trustee with the Awesome Foundation San Jose, a local chapter of a citizen philanthropy group. We’re dedicated to improving the San Jose community through $1k grants for cultural and social projects that might not find funding through more traditional sources.

I also enjoy exploring the San Francisco Bay Area’s many beautiful trails on hikes with my husband. Hiking has taught me to challenge myself in new ways and led me to some beautiful views.

Much like hiking alone isn’t the best idea, I don’t consider writing a solitary adventure, either. Working with words is fun, but working with people makes it rewarding. I value creative teamwork, whether it’s learning about a subject from sources or subject matter experts; consulting with editors or web team members on how to make content clearer or more engaging; or collaborating with graphic designers to bring content to life.
